A conversation with our founders:

Co-founders Indré Rockefeller and Andy Krantz started Paravel in 2016 to reimagine travel, creating travel goods that feature a timeless aesthetic, exceptional functionality, and forward-thinking sustainability. Recently, Indré and Andy sat down to chat Paravel past, present, and future:

Andy: We get this question all the time, so it’s a great place to start: why did we start Paravel?

Indré: I love this question because the answer is what makes us both tick. You and I have been avid travelers and environmentalists for as long as I can remember. We spent years comparing travel hacks and notes on luggage, but could never find a brand that checked all the boxes for us. We spoke with our friends, and then their friends, and quickly realized we weren’t alone in feeling like there were no good options--and so we decided to create them ourselves.

Andy: We’re on course to become the first fully sustainable travel brand by 2021. Sustainability is absolutely crucial to us, and your Antarctica trip was a big part of that. Can you retell the story?

Indré: Yes! In 2018, I went on a polar expedition to Antarctica with The Nature Conservancy. Seeing the effects of climate change first hand in such a pristine environment completely altered my perspective, and the message from the scientists on the trip stuck with me. They said the next 10 years are the most critical for the next 10,000 years when it comes to mitigating the effects of climate change. I called you as soon as I docked back in Argentina, and together we decided we were going to move sustainability from a priority to the priority for Paravel.

How we do it

Andy: Can you tell me about your creative process when you design new bags?

Indré: I imagine a world where travel is at its best and start from there. Sometimes that means looking to the past for inspiration, sometimes it’s looking towards the future, but most importantly, it’s looking at what our customers want today.

Andy: And what about choosing our materials?

Indre: Upcycling and sustainable material innovation is core to our approach. We focus on either repurposing what is already out in the universe or designing around cutting edge eco materials. Right now I'm excited about playing with biofabrics. In the end, every material is rigorously tested to meet our quality and design standards in addition to getting stamps of approval from leading sustainability certification programs.

Andy: Before a new Paravel bag design enters production, what are the standards it has to meet for you?

Indre: It has to be as sustainable as possible, first and foremost. I then make sure new styles visually complement our other products perfectly, because it’s important that they work together as a system. Finally, I carry around a prototype for months. I have to absolutely love it - oh, and it needs to have gotten at least three compliments from strangers!

Indré: Okay my turn to ask you a question. What’s one thing we’ve accomplished this year that you’re proud of?

Andy: Making the Aviator Carry-On the first ever carbon-neutral suitcase. We offset the emissions generated at every step of its production and delivery and to be sure it’s the best possible choice for the planet. We also offset the average emissions of our customers’ first trip, and we did it all without raising the price. It’s a huge leap forward in sustainable travel, and it is an evolution from reducing Paravel’s impact on the planet to actively mitigating our customers’ impact as well.

Our Favourites

Indré: If you could take only two Paravel bags with you on a trip around the world, which bags would you choose and why?

Andy: The Aviator Carry-On Plus, packed with a Negative Nylon Fold-Up Bag for the return trip to fit all the shopping I inevitably do while abroad. What about you?

Indré: The Aviator Plus in Safari and my Cabana Tote. Can I please bring a third bag?! Just the Weekender, that’s all I’m asking!

Andy: Always breaking the rules, but I’ll give it to you! In exchange, you have to answer one last question: what’s your favorite thing about working with me?

Indré: That’s so typical of you to end on that question! In all honesty though, it’s the amount we laugh together. It’s so important to be able to find joy in the everyday so we can bring that back to our Paravel community.

Andy: And that, I think, is the right note to end on. Onwards and upwards!
