PHOTOGRAPHY BY: AHMAD AL-DABAGH"The best way to explore a city is to take your time and let curiosity guide you. Wander the streets, stop at cafes, and ask locals about their favourite hidden spots. It’s often in those unexpected places that you find the most memorable experiences."
What locations did you visit?
Bondi, Maroubra, Coogee, Circular Quay, The Rocks, Surry Hills, Newtown.
Where did you stay?
I stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney. With stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge (from the harbour suite), it was the perfect base for exploring the city.
Three words to describe your journey?
Peaceful, colourful and optimistic.
Discoveries or hidden gems along the way?
A.P Bakery in Surry Hills is a must-visit for those who appreciate artisanal baked goods. If you find yourself near Coogee Beach, don’t miss Bather’s Coogee overlooking the ocean. Don’t miss the ocean pool. For an off-the-beaten-path experience, Newtown is bursting with eclectic shops, street art, and great food.
If the location were a color? A sound? A taste?
Shades of blue and green, reflecting the stunning harbour and lush green spaces. The gentle lapping of the water against the rocks, mixed with the sounds of the city. Freshly brewed Aussie coffee.
What left a lasting impression?
The views of the Sydney Opera House and the harbour from my suite at the Four Seasons were breathtaking. The beach culture: Coogee, Bondi, Bronte or Maroubra, the relaxed yet vibrant vibe is something that makes Sydney feel special.
A local must-see or must-do?
Exploring The Rocks, where you can walk through the historic cobblestone streets and enjoy the lively market scene. For a unique and hidden gem, take a dip at Mahon Pool in Maroubra. Bondi to Coogee coastal walk.
The best thing you ate and where to find it?
A.P Bakery in Surry Hills is a must-visit for the best pastries, Lune Croissanterie in Rosebery serves up some of the best croissants and Tokyo Lamington for a classic Aussie cake with a twist. Moon and Back in Rosebery is a cozy cafe that serves up delicious coffee and pastries.
A local market that overtook your suitcase?
The Rocks Market in the City is a great place to shop for unique souvenirs, locally made crafts, and artisan food.
Go-to spots to take in arts and culture?
For art lovers, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia offer a rich cultural experience with world-class exhibitions. Newtown is another cultural hub, with its independent galleries, quirky stores, and a bohemian atmosphere.
Wellness experiences or places to slow down?
If you’re seeking a peaceful retreat, head to Coogee Beach and enjoy the calming beach vibes. It’s perfect for a leisurely walk or swim. Maroubra Beach is another tranquil spot to relax and enjoy the sun. For ultimate relaxation, I recommend spending a few hours at the Crown Spa at Crown Towers Sydney.
Your favorite scenic route or way to get around?
Crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge by car or on foot offers the most stunning views of the city and its harbour. Take a ferry ride from Circular Quay to Manly Beach. It’s not only practical but also offers spectacular views of the coastline and the harbour. Circular Quay to Milsons Point by ferry is another great way to see the sights.
What item(s) do you always pack?
I never forget to bring my cameras and plenty of Kodak film.
Do you have any exploration rituals?
My ritual consists of grabbing a coffee, loading my camera with film, and listening to my favourite playlist while I wander.
Best way to discover somewhere new?
The best way to explore a city is to take your time and let curiosity guide you. Wander the streets, stop at cafes, and ask locals about their favourite hidden spots. It’s often in those unexpected places that you find the most memorable experiences.
Travel tips or secrets to share?
Packing cubes are my secret weapon for staying organised. I swear by Paravel packing cubes for keeping everything in place. When traveling, always have a reusable water bottle, it’s an easy way to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.
Where to next?
Next, I’m looking forward to exploring Sri Lanka, Mallorca in the summer, London, Puglia, and Sicily. I’m always dreaming of my next adventure.
